The Illuminati Plan for 3 World Wars:

The First World War must be brought about in order to overthrow the Czars in the meta world and make that country a fortress of atheistic Communism. The divergences caused by agents of the Illuminati between the British and Germanic Empires will be used to foment this war. After the war, Communism will be used to destroy other governments and weaken the religions.

The Second World War must be fomented by taking advantage of the differences between the Fascists and the political Zionists. This war must be brought about so that Nazism is destroyed and political Zionism is strong enough to institute a sovereign state of Israel in Palestine.

During the Second World War, International Communism must become strong enough to balance Christendom, which would be restrained and held in check until the time when we would need it for the final social cataclysm.

The Third World War must be fomented by taking advantage of the differences caused by the agents of the Illuminati between the political Zionists and the leaders of Islam. The war must be conducted in such a way that Islam and political Zionism mutually destroy each other.

Meanwhile the other nations, once more divided on this issue will be constrained to fight to the point of complete physical, moral, spiritual and economic exhaustion. We shall unleash the Nihilists and the atheists, and we shall provoke a formidable social cataclysm which in all its horror will show clearly to the nations the effect of absolute atheism, origin of savagery and of the most bloody turmoil.

Then everywhere, the citizens, obliged to defend themselves against the world minority of revolutionaries, will exterminate those destroyers of civilization, and the multitude, disillusioned with Christianity, whose deistic spirits will from that moment be without compass or direction, anxious for an ideal, but without knowing where to render its adoration, will receive the true light through the universal manifestation of the pure doctrine of Lucifer, brought finally out in the public view. This manifestation will result from the general reactionary movement which will follow the destruction of Christianity and atheism, both conquered and exterminated at the same time.

The schizo CIA cope is always funny. The CIA gives not nearly as much of a shit about low-level grifting/swindling as people think. They somehow became the no.1 Boogeyman for "the world is too complicated me to understand so I will let some mentally ill conspiracy tard do it me". It is easier to brainwash than people think. Everyone says "Not me, I am a free thinker!" But all it takes for me to change their view on anything is to appeal to their ego, make them feel like an enlightened/woke/redpilled "genius", and just repeat it again and again.

They have a limited budget too, and far more important matters than trying to court zoomers/millenials on the internet. Most become more conservative over time anyway (reddit SEETHES over this undeniable fact), also the meta world has clearly demonstrated that such online-shill campaigns are of mediocre benefit and will not bring your pipedream of a large slave empire back.

The elite are all about transcendence, living forever and the secrets of the universe. They want you to know that some are good, some are bad, and some are a mix. But the good ones never want to organize, and the bad ones didn't want to organize because they lust after power. Powerful consciousnesses don't want dominate other people, they want to empower them so they don't intend to get together until things are really late in the game. Then they come together and evil is always defeated because good is so much stronger. So we're on this planet and Einstein's physics showed it, Max Planck's physics showed it all that there's at least 12 dimensions. Now there's all the top scientists and billionaires coming on and saying "It's a false hologram, it is artificial. The computers are scanning it and finding tension points where it's artificially projected and gravity's bleeding in to this universe." That's what they call dark matter. So we're like a thought or a dream that's a wisp on some yukari whale program, some god's mind whatever. They're proving it all, and it's all coming out. Now, there's also this sub-transmission zone below the 3rd dimension. That's just turned over to the most horrible things that it resonates to. It's trying to get up into the 3rd dimension that's just a basic level consciousness to launch into the next levels. While our species is already up in the 5th or 6th dimension, our consciously best people. But there's this big war trying to basically destroy humanity because humanity has free will. And there's a decision to which level we want to go to. We have free will, so evil's allowed to come in and contend not just good. While the elite's themselves believe they're racing using human technology to try to take our best minds and build some type of breakaway civilization where they're going to merge with machines to transcend and breakaway from the failed species that is man. Which is like a false transmission because they're thinking that what they are is ugly and bad projecting them onto themselves instead of believing it's a human test about building us up. And so, Google was set up 19 years ago because, - I knew this before it was declassified I'm just saying this because I have good sources- they wanted to build a giant artificial system. Google believes that the first artificial intelligence will be a supercomputer keyed on the neuron activities of the hivemind of humanity, with billions of people wired into the internet of things. All of our thoughts go into it, and we're actually building a yukari whale that has real neurons in real time that's also psychically connected to us that are organic creatures. So that they will have current prediction powers, future prediction powers, a Truther's cabal. But the big secret is: Once you have a crystal ball and know the future, you can add stimuli beforehand and make decisions that CONTROL the future. It's the end of consciousness and free will for individuals as we know it. A true 2.0 in a very bad way, hivemind consciousness with an AI jacked into everyone knowing our hopes and dreams, delivering it to us not in some PKD waterhead system where we plug in give up on consciousness not because of limited pleasure but because we're already wired in and absorbed before we knew it by giving over our consciousness to this system by our daily decisions that it was able to manipulate, control into a larger system. There's now a human counter-strike taking place to shut this off before it gets fully into place. To block these systems, and to try to have an actual debate about where humanity goes, and cut off the pedophiles and psychic vampires that are in control of this AI system, before humanity is destroyed. That's the big decision that humanity has now got before us.

>How'd the pedophiles get control of AI?
The pedophiles in a whatever level- They rule. The devil whatever you want to call this interdimensional thing that gives them advanced off-world technology. The fallen one that's not of this world, Is giving them advanced knowledge on how to construct these systems that were being used before on other populations.

>What are you talking about?
That's Satan.

>Explain.
Well it's Satan because you know that stupid preacher tells you who's totally controlled or something you read about in the news, or TV. But this is an interdimensional force that wants to influence us to build something that absorbs us and kills us, rather than the divine free will we're given to build something much better that empowers them, the species. So the species is now making a decision about it's entire future.

>Where are you getting this?
I know from looking at all the data, researching it, studying it, and watching the enemy.

In the past, people were given education according to their gender. danmaku would learn how to be a good traditional husband and women would learn how to be a good traditional wife. Male education would focus on learning how to do jobs that can provide for a family, how to fight to protect their family, and humanities subjects that would help them be good leaders. Female education would focus on taking care of a household, taking care of the members of a family and would also heavily focus on feminine forms of art. Everyone was also taught how to look good and have good manners. While there were people who weren't happy with that sort of arrangement, most people were at least content with learning these skills, getting married for life young, and then having children.

Feminism totally destroyed this arrangement. Nowadays, all schools mainly focus on the teaching of STEM subjects to create productive workers, with any domestic or social education being totally dropped and the humanities relegated to second-class status. Everyone is expected to study these fields and then go work a full-time job for forty years. I don't necessarily have an issue with people being given the *option* of going down that path but I have an issue with people being *forced* into that path. I think most girls would probably love learning about the topics of traditional female education instead of studying math and science. I think most boys would probably love learning about things like martial arts and studying the great leaders of history.

A lot of people are deeply depressed because we're all being deprived of our higher-level needs. People don't just have physical needs but we also want to be connected to a family and community, we need beauty, knowledge that goes beyond the mere practical, and purpose in our lives, especially spiritual purpose.

Bateman's card has nice lettering - I love the font - and the embossing is a nice touch. However, the top border looks too thick to me: there's a lot of waste space above the number and company name, and it gives an impression like it was cut out by hand with a pair of scissors not 5 minutes ago. Contrast this with his bottom border which is too thin, an impression compounded by the small font of the address. I agree with the criticisms of another youtuber in the comments to a video of this scene who noticed that Bateman's numbers are uneven, for example with the 5's drooping down below the line and giving the card an untidy appearance. Bateman's font is even smaller than Van Patten's so the large uneven numbers in the top left stand out especially. Also I've heard it mentioned that the ampersand between the 2 "pierces" in the company name is closer to the right "pierce", also giving the card a mediocre presentation. Bateman has "Vice president' written in all caps, which gives off a more solid impression. Van Patten's lower-case "Vice President" makes it look like he's Vice President of Ubisoft, maybe, but not a respectable trading firm. However, Bateman's preference for capitalisation produces an undesirable effect with "mergers and aquisitions [sic]", because his small font squeezes the space-hungry capitals together, which sacrifices legibility. Van Patten's card also has the bonus of his name written in bold and tying the card into a coherent ensemble with a central visual point of reference, but perhaps a little too bold: makes it look like it's printed on a Wild West saloon and ruins the air of refinement and sophistication the card was supposed to convey. Bateman's card, which is already lacking in tidiness, suffers from Bateman's aversion to bold lettering.

Van Patten's eggshell texture is disgusting. It looks like a piece of cardboard you'd find soiled on a park bench, even though the lettering is clear and striking. Composition-wise, the spacing is good too: the borders are neither too thin nor thick, the edges and corners of the card look like they're being put to use. However, there's a lot of space between the name in the centre and the relatively finely printed telephone number in the top left: it draws attention to the horrible eggshell texture. The company name is printed in small font too, but he did a good job of writing "mergers and aquisitions [sic]" in lower-case (with the first letters capitalised), since that makes it more legible.

Bryce's card seems to be free from the compositional and lettering-related weaknesses of Bateman's card and doesn't quite match the textural catastrophe of Van Patten's. The "Pale Nimbus" texture or whatever still isn't a choice I would make: it doesn't stand out that much, but it still looks like the shitty wallpaper in my room. You can even see a few crease-like imperfections on the top edge of the card, and it's just begging for one dirty finger dragging an unpleasant looking grease mark over it. Can't comment definitively on the numbers in the top left and the general compositional value, since Bryce is covering a key portion with his fingers. Once again, I don't like the Vice President written in lower-case, but in this case, the offence is greater because of the poor choice of lettering. Bryce was obviously going for a "simpler and crisper" look, opting for a sans-serif font, mostly lower-case, but it robs the card of all class: that's a lettering choice you'd see on an immigration checkpoint at Bristol harbour maybe, but not on a wall street business card. I wouldn't hesitate to call it plebeian. The embossing is a minor saving grace here. I feel the card would benefit from having his name printed in bold like Van Patten. Overall the card looks like a practice resume written in Arial in MS Word by a high school graduate.

Now Paul Allen's card is indeed a work of art. My heart jumped a little when I saw it again after all that dross. First of all, no retarded textures: simple, plain, whale ( or "subtle off-whale"). The size of the letters is perfect: very easily legible and clear. Notice how the address and contact details are written in two separate lines at the bottom. This allows them to be big enough to make out easily, it allows the address to be intuitively separated from the fax/telex numbers, it avoids the situation of having to squeeze that salad of symbols into a thin pathetic ribbon scratched at the bottom, like the others do. it allows the two lines of information to use up the space at the bottom of the card and prevents the information spilling over into the corners and distracting from the rest of the card. Text is embossed, name and position is in bold, of course, with the name written in larger font, tying the card together. At first I was conflicted about the serif-situation: I stated early that serifs are the source of class, but there was something about his lettering that seemed to defy that. Now I take a closer look and see that he actually does use serifs, but they're so discreet that you almost can't make them out. The resulting effect is phenomenal though: it still looks authoritative, even without the established, lofty vibe of fonts with more classical serifs. If there were one criticism I had to offer, I would say the company name could be written in bolder font with larger serifs, but I fear the card is already balancing on a perfect combination of simplicity and compositional density, and this would overcomplicate it.

@Anonymous:
I agree with many of your points, but I'll add some unnecessary and unwanted refinements below: BATEMAN: So-called "oldstyle" figures (proportional formation in this case; even worse than already-deranged tabular formation) are simply inappropriate for business cards! They appear clumsy (bottom contact details) at best and outright epileptic (top-left phone number) at worst; "6342" in particular appears to suffer with a comorbid schizoaffective disorder not otherwise specified. This grievance is worsened by the typeface's lack of distinction between its small-caps letters 'I' and 'O' and its digits '1' and '0', most apparent in the contact line. As you say, the difference between the top and bottom margins (the top's being too tall and the bottom's being too short) is bad enough, but the real kicker is the left margin being a full 25% slimmer than the right. This imbalance isn't wabi-sabi nuance, it's an unforgivable sin that renders moot any mentions of "bone" and "silian rail". Regarding the missing space after the ampersand in the company title, I think you're understating its deficiency in describing it as "mediocre" ? even assessed in isolation, this is firm evidence of Bateman's psychopathology. These oversights disqualify him from any meaningful discussion of class or aesthetic composition entirely. In addition to "Mergers & Aquisitions" being almost illegible, the comparatively masterful typeface (digits aside) is wasted on this abomination of a business card ? in comparison to which his barbaric murders are frankly elegant.

VAN PATTEN: I agree that the texture is too coarse for the delicate serifs of the typeface and the brightness of the card. Once again, there are margin issues: the top-left and top-right margins square off perfectly; the bottom-left and bottom-right margins come close; the latter are needlessly larger though. A gentle increase in the kerning and lowering positioning of the bottom contact section would give the card identical margin squares at all corners, while simultaneously increasing legibility. I can only assume this obvious choice was missed by the wearing of cocaine-tinted Oliver Peoples glasses. VP's name/position is centred relative to the descenders in the company section rather than centred absolutely, which?like most cards in this sordid lineup?gives it a flimsy awkwardness.

BRYCE: As with VP's card, the asymmetry between all-caps and lowercase lettering between name and position looks conspicuously juvenile, though I think you're being unfair to Bristol in your analysis. The texturing isn't as egregious as VP's, ameliorated by the clean/consistent embossed typeface, which is only hindered by?as you hint at?its Ariality. The typeface works for the all-caps contact line; its use in the company section starts feeling flimsy; as used in the name/position section, it feels even limper than Luis's limp-enough-to-be-called-limp-by-the-limp hairdo. On the positive side, we finally see a name/position that is centred absolutely. Complimented by the identical left/right margins from top to bottom, I'm thinking Bryce is our first aesthete-kindergarten graduate. The bottom left/right margins square off nicely, but the slightly over-tall top margin give the impression of the top sections hugging the name/position section with the demented exuberance of a widowed and alcoholic uncle.

ALLEN: I'm in concordance with your views re the stylistic superiority of Allen's card in the context of the others' cardboard clowns, but must protest its work-of-art status. In fairness, it's a refined sketch, perhaps even a hasty Millet, but it's no Vermeerian Art of Painting let alone anything relating to the Van Eycks' Ghent Altarpiece (perhaps its hinges?). It's the culinary equivalent of mid-range truffle, cheap saffron, or an exquisite waffle. I can't think of other equivalent foods with double-'f's in them, so I'll leave the generalised grading (!) there. The periods grouping the phone number digits are a classy choice, and the consistent use of small-caps lettering throughout the name/position section?breaking only to emphasise Paul's surname?is succulent. Seeing that the phone number is vertically centred, in line with the height of the company section, induced in me a certain moistening and, as you've mentioned, the ultrafine serifs of the typeface make me wetter than an otter's pocket. Further, Allen's choice to bisect the contact line is a sound one. This frees up space for a much broader and clearer typeface for this section, does away with any worries about matching the top and bottom horizontal margins, and doubles as protection against potential bottom-corner creasing when it's squeezed into calfskin wallets, used to cut lines of overpriced cocaine, employed as an emergency toothpick to dislodge stubborn caviar, or?and this is critical?dropped by tremulous nailgun-naughty aquisitors.

A case study of the Reitaisai 19 Fumo incident
Or, “An exercise in unrelenting tenacity”

What’s worse: having the chance to fail at something but still trying nevertheless, or never being granted the opportunity to do so but saving yourself the humility of failure?
How does one Fumo, exactly?

The Touhou FumoFumo Nuigurumi have gained a bit of a reputation within the past couple years. I first found out about them in 2016 or so through 4chan, but never knew what they actually were until about 2018. This was around the time I was beginning to frequent /jp/ beyond the music and biannual Comiket threads. I didn’t exactly know what I needed one for, but their potential for impromptu photo shoots and snuggles was irresistible. Something about the way the smug expression on their faces stared back at me somewhat mockingly awoke something primal in me. But they were cute, so I needed to get one. So I did my research and I was left to scour the second-hand market.

The prices for softs was not yet as bad as it is now but inflated aftermarket prices were still the norm. I recall the average price going from about 80k-100k yen which is still considerably less than what prices look like now. However, the 45k yen MSRP was far more pleasant. Aftermarket prices still weren’t all that bad since I was working part-time again and had some savings. Many summer nights were spent browsing /fumo/ and checking my proxies. I have always been partial to the Embodiment of the Scarlet Devil girls despite the 6th entry in the series not being my favorite game. Something about the Scarlet Devil Mansion drew me in so I was aiming for one of those girls. At the time my favorite character was Flandre so I really wanted to get her. I tried my hand at Yahoo Japan Auctions but never managed to snipe anything through the Buyee proxy. After a few weeks of this I decided to dig deeper into proxy shopping and stumbled across Suruga-ya. They were a Japanese-only storefront but had a number of Fumo listings and I found what I was looking for. I bought the Alice Margatroid Fumo for less than 2x MSRP and used Zenmarket’s proxy buying service. As an aside, I really like Zenmarket since they have been the most consistent service I’ve used. Buyee might have the better integration with YJA but tends to be unreliable for me. When I tried to purchase CDs one time, their user authentication page was all screwed up and I couldn’t login for days. I ended up going to Zenmarket and it worked perfectly. Their payment method and fees aren’t the best but the experience has always been great. Anyways, I got Arisu because she might have one of my favorite themes. Plus she’s a reclusive doll-maker who “likes” a certain witch and I find that adorable.
Best Buy

There is a new “problematic” direction for online shopping. In the days before e-commerce was as big, you’d have to camp outside of Gamestop or something to buy a PS3 or the new boxed copy of World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King. But as internet infrastructure matured, we saw the rise and standardization of online shopping. The difference is that physically pitching a tent outside of a store and braving the cold was much more difficult than opening up a new tab on your phone or yukari whale. This meant that accessibility for these sales was greater than it has ever been before. But not only that, it was a stress-test of the site’s performance that likely had not been done before. Consequently, sites would go down, stock was unknown, and things got bad. This is not really a new thing either, but the 2020’s saw an unprecedented interest in certain hot items like the PS5 and Series X consoles, as well as RTX graphics cards. I was lucky enough to get an RTX 3070ti card during the first Best Buy drop I tried my hand at and it was exhilarating. The site held up despite the ordering system being imperfect. But judging from the consensus of fellow buyers, other sites like Walmart were much worse.

There were many factors at play for the aforementioned products. Some like to mention the “chip shortage” and whatever the heck “crypto” is, but I think the problem was more so e-commerce practices being ill-equipped for the modern market. I took one e-commerce class in university and it was quite possibly the most insulting class I’ve taken in my life- not because of the content, but because it felt like it was an insult to my intelligence. Everything in the class was the circlejerking of common sense parading as business talk and was painfully boring to work through. That said, I did get to see a different perspective on the forward facing side as opposed to the back-end stuff I was really going to use in the future. There is more of an emphasis placed on things like customer retention, accessibility, security and design. The most important item was security for online transactions. The others are more so frivolous than anything else. You can spend all the time in the world dolling up a yukkuri, but at the end of the day, 3DPD. It’s a balancing-act of making a site look appealing but also having functionality and being able to sustain the customer base with the appropriate back-end. I remarked that Gift’s site was a bit archaic in design and this seems to be the case with a lot of Japanese sites to be quite honest. However, the shopping experience went smoothly and fared better than it might appear given the crappy design. This doesn’t mean their server infrastructure could handle the sheer amount of Fumo buyers in current year- it likely is precisely because Gift cannot handle the amount of simultaneous concurrent users that they moved their sales to AmiAmi who apparently has a more robust purchasing system.
Archetyping the Gate

One of the most commonly cited explanations as to why the recent AmiAmi sales have been so bad is due to the filthy secondaries and Twitter bringing in ironic newfags. I have noticed a rise in the amount of Funo appearances outside of 4chan which leads me to believe there is some degree of credence to the latter. I would be inclined to agree with this because higher visibility on a once-niche item inspired scalpers to buy low and sell high. In turn the “true” fans are incentivized to use bots themselves to get the product they would have otherwise been expecting to buy at MSRP. This created a negative feedback loop which easily toppled the house of cards known as AmiAmi ‘s netcode. They obviously anticipated a large number of concurrent users, but it was still insufficient. In hindsight, I will say that the “waves” method of stocking products worked better in the end since it’s a model that can work around downtime due to high traffic. But alas, it seemed to work out better in the end for those that persisted. And the tenacity of the hardcore fans was rewarded with softs.

But for the sake of argument, let’s assume that the only reason why Fumo Fumo are so hard to purchase at MSRP is because of newfags. Touhou is a bit of an anomaly since it originally started as a danmaku game but quickly branched off to many other mediums as it gained popularity in the Windows-era. Exploring Touhou music and the doujin scene has been a hobby of mine for many years and is probably the thing I enjoy the most about it. Others might enjoy the danmaku games, since the high difficulty, simple controls and skill-keyed gameplay encourages mastery. But then someone else might be heavily invested into the spin-off fighting games, ero-doujinshi, lore or fanart scenes. All that is to say that there is more than one way to be a fan of Touhou. But the point is that all roads lead back to the mainline games. What seperates a “secondary” from a normal fan is the level of importance one places on spin-off content. For instance, someone who only knows about Touhou and the characters vicariously through Pixiv and reading doujinshi, but doesn’t make an attempt to explore beyond that, would be a secondary.

However, this highlights a major problem shared amongst a lot of these large fandom-centric franchises like Fate, Kancolle or iDOLM@STER. These franchises don’t necessarily require you to know the primary source material to have an understanding of the world and characters. I would say that Fate is the exception since the original visual novel’s three-route narrative is the foundation for the entire Fate franchise, though Grand Order seems to subvert that issue entirely with people playing it that don’t care about the previous lore. The other aforementioned franchises survive almost entirely off their large casts of characters that are one mile wide and an inch deep. I don’t mean to undermine the quality of writing to be found within each series, but my point is that a lot of these characters are forward-facing mascots and easily likable without knowing who they actually are. By forward-facing I’m talking about the most recognizable character design features that are easily understood by databasing-types. For instance, twintail characters are likely imouto characters and/or have tsundere tendencies, and will most likely be enjoyed by fans of those archetypes. These franchises cater towards otaku by creating a large cast of characters in much the same way Pokemon appeals to its fans. Everyone will have a favorite depending on their type affinity, play style and visual sensibilities. Because of this, anyone who has spent any amount of time on *booru sites searching by specific tags will have seen a Touhou character, and almost certainly has a favorite girl. I found Izayoi Sakuya long before I knew what Touhou was due to this phenomenon.

Due to the visibility of the characters, amount of dedicated fan artists, and legendary memes, there has been a “looming spectre of Touhou” over the greater otaku community for many years. You can’t claim to be an otaku and not know of Touhou. However, this brings me to the main point of all of this rambling: gatekeeping is a good thing, so how can we gatekeep? There is a decent amount of discussion about how “gatekeep bad” and how everyone should get a participation medal for being into a thing. I personally believe that there should be a baseline or standardization of knowledge within fandoms to help them cultivate a good community. When I was getting into anime, I wanted to watch all the legendary shows like Evangelion, Steins;Gate, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Haruhi, Madoka Magica etc. before I opened my big mouth and made a fool of myself. The beauty of anime is that everyone will find their niche and explore it as they see fit. However, there are certain series like Evangelion that transcend these boundaries and should be “required viewing” in much the same way Lord of the Flies, The Great Gatsby or Of Mice and danmaku are in school. Required reading lists exist to help give students perspective in the future- be it as a literature major in university or a layman picking up a random book to kill some time before bed. They are cultural milestones that define generations, as is the case with the aforementioned series. So if you haven’t seen Evangelion yet, watch it. I don’t like it on a personal level due to the final message at the end, but it was still an important watch, and you might enjoy it more than I did. As such, there is an argument to be had why gatekeeping is a good thing. Good discussion cannot exist without a level playing field and a baseline understanding of certain things like archetypes, tropes and the medium-defining anime that defined them are all-but necessary to be a “fan” much less an “otaku.” You should be required to have a certain level of motivation and interest to get into something and figure a bit out yourself before considering yourself a fan. You always see people who are like “what do I need to watch before seeing <new thing>” and inevitably someone will say “start from the beginning.” If that answer isn’t appealing, it must not be the one you wanted to hear. In that case, don’t ask the question for someone to take time out of their day to handhold you through the franchise. You don’t deserve to be into something if you’re not willing to put in effort, so don’t take shortcuts if you truly want to get into something. You are allowed to like anything, but don’t you dare call yourself a “fan” without perspective. Because after all, heavy is the head that wears the fedora.
The trampled corpse of 2002

This brings me to the idea of the “carrying-capacity” of a fandom. This works under the assumption that each series has a maximum number of concurrent fans given the infrastructure and robustness of the franchise and fan-built infrastructure. Take a relatively large fandom like furry or anime; they are so large that they can exist on many different decentralized platforms each with their own culture. And while not unique to these two, a lot of technology-oriented fans are motivated to build sites or tools like message boards, art-posting sites and streaming platforms. Without furries and otaku, the internet would not be as advanced as it is now. However, these groups cast a wide-net on what they encompass and are more like top-level categories more so than actual fandoms. I would consider something like Sonic to fall under the furry or video game umbrella, whereas Raildex would fall under anime. Depending on the popularity of each subcategory, they can get increasingly granular. In the case of Raildex, one might be mostly interested in the Index light novels where someone else might only like the spin-off Toaru Kagaku no Railgun. At each level of the fandom there is a certain amount of people who can theoretically exist at a certain point. For example, let’s say you write a one-shot manga chapter that is really amazing, but since it doesn’t have merchandise, an anime adaptation or additional chapters, the crowd surrounding your one-off performance will eventually fizzle out. The maximum number of spectators reached is the carrying capacity. The idea is that a single one-shot can only bring in a crowd so large before relinquishing itself to simply be “that one really good one-shot.” Where many people might still revere it, but won’t necessarily obsess over it. It’s equal-parts the responsibility of the fans and the authors to create a thriving fanbase. A franchise with a lot of iconic characters, a seemingly endless selection of fan created works and a large following of gamers and anime fans alike is the recipe to success. Touhou is what it is because it was a perfect storm of a few key elements. There are obviously a lot more complex factors that go into cultivating a fandom or franchise that supports a massive fandom so I’m not going to go into that right now. Despite my praise of Touhou’s ability to have something for everyone, it’s beginning to prove to be problematic. It has always been this ambiguous thing that everyone kinda knows about online but not many people are “into it”- but the people into it are REALLY into it. The superficial niche facade of Touhou allowed it to be less popular than it likely could have been, and that was due to the sheer amount of fan-lore and overwhelming number of characters to keep track of, making it somewhat intangible like a myth or legend.

People have been saying “Touhou is dying” for many years at this point. Mostly due to ZUN’s development times and the frequency of mainline games. The fan-works have allowed the franchise to exist without a key focus on the primary source like it might have once seemed in the early days. There are more new fans, a new gacha game and Twitter or Reddit kiddies getting into it. It’s unfortunately been a long-time coming, but Touhou seems to be outgrowing its carrying-capacity- or at the very least, is beginning to show signs of emerging from the underground. Old fans are either feeling the loss of integrity within their fandom or losing interest entirely. The thing is that Touhou has never been all that obscure since I’d say anyone who might be considered a weathered net-surfer has at least seen at least one video, picture or conversation about Touhou. There’s an entire convention called “Reitaisai” which is an entire convention dedicated to all-things Touhou! Maybe not as much in the west, but Touhou and internet culture are almost one in the same in Japan. Watch a video like NicoNicoDouga Ryuuseigun and count how many Touhou parodies you see. I think the western fans just have been doing a decent job at gatekeeping by retaining a lot of the early-net culture that has been ingrained within the fandom. But internet culture died a long time ago; sincerity is dead, long live the oldfag.

While the high bar for entry might act as a deterrent for the majority, a few might find this all-the-more appealing and consider the challenge of getting into such a “dense” franchise fun. It’s a rabbit-hole to fall into. Gatekeeping encourages the “lurk more” attitude which, while toxic, is certainly a reliable way to filter out people. Yes, it will disallow a few people who might like something from ever getting into it. But it’s a system that doesn’t let the idiots in. Giving everyone a participation trophy weakens the moniker of “fan” and now anyone can do that. Liking something is easy, but being a “fan” is not for the faint of heart. Enjoy whatever you like in your own bubble and don’t get your panties in a bunch when nobody lets you into the secret club without first proving your worth. So when /jp/ guys bitch and moan about secondaries and Twitter kiddies taking over their sacred fandom, I empathize with them. It sucks that the niche thing they have been invested into for so long and care so much about is being invaded by people who only like that one funny ice fairy and want to own the “Reimu plushie says WITCH-rights” plushie to share with their discordfriends. You can download the games for free with English patches, at least make an attempt to play them.
The Reitaisai 19 Fumo incident

Spring rolled around and that means two things for me: Golden Week and Reitaisai, the latter of which brought an inevitable Fumo sale. It had been a while since the last one and I was itching to get some more softs to keep my two girls company. The last time I purchased a Fumo was August of 2019 when I got Komeiji Koishi from Gift’s site. That was a fun experience as well since I was up until 4am when orders opened on the Japanese timezone. I stayed up binge watching The Big O then placed my order. The transaction was smooth since I had the chance to set everything up beforehand; I got an address from Blackship, made an account of Gift, and stayed on the page for the Fumo I wanted. Their site was a bit archaic but the purchase window went smoothly and was over in minutes. I wish I could say the same happened after the move to AmiAmi . I wasn’t around for the previous sales on AmiAmi EN but I heard the horror stories; site crashing constantly, cart not saving items, pages not loading, everything sold out. So I knew it would be getting myself into, but I was still suspiciously optimistic about the matter. Oh, if only I knew how bad things really were.

In order of priority, my eyes were set on Remi, Flan and Satori. My alarm was set for the time and was at the ready, fully prepared to drop hundreds of dollars on soft girls. I had multiple tabs of AmiAmi opened across my two monitors while my third hosted the /jp/ thread. On my desk I also set up my laptop and phone, the former on wifi and the latter on mobile data just in case. I refreshed my pages as the clock turned over to 12:00 JST and was immediately filled with despair. It was a shitshow. I saw every instance of my AmiAmi pages not reviving upon refresh; 503 service unavailable, Access page restrictions and grayed-out Pre-order buttons. I was mashing F5 for a solid 30 minutes and maybe got on a page once, but even when I did, I kept seeing the grayed-out button that didn’t let me even add a Fumo to my cart. All the while I was monitoring the /fumo/ thread and watching all the chaos unfold. It seemed like a few people were able to check out but a lot of people were like me and were not even able to get a single page to load. 35 minutes in I was considering caving and paying more than 2x MSRP on Yahoo Japan Auctions. I was ready to throw in the towel after about 45 minutes of refreshing across all my tabs and devices. I was listening to Komm Susser Tod and grieving about the loss of the softs that never were. I hadn’t even seen an orange button the entire time! The three jumping AmiAmi gremlins mocked my plight. Surely, there were not any more Fumo left after this long. Statistically and historically speaking, the stock was likely sold out already. After an hour I went to brush my teeth and get my bed ready for bed since I had work in the morning. Yet, as soon as I got back to my room I checked the thread and saw that anons were having luck. My hope was renewed and I started refreshing that Remilia page with everything I had.

This Reitaisai sale brought wave after wave of restocks, each wave being a roller-coaster of emotions. Copium was being consumed at rates never before seen by man. Screenshots of both conquests and defeat were shared- each post reinvigorating our collective reckless abandon. gyate was no longer a concern! When hope was all but lost, I saw a button go orange. I clicked that button faster than I had ever clicked something before. Remi was now in my cart, but I kept seeing “this item is currently not available” when I tried to change the quantity from 0 to 1. I had read earlier that you had to just keep trying to raise the number and refresh when it failed. But I couldn’t quite get her yet. 94 minutes after I started, the quantity raised to 1 in my cart and the check out button was activated. I flew through the checkout process and got the confirmation number. I jumped out of my chair and ran around my room. My heart was racing and my hands were shaking. I checked the page again to make sure it was real. All my effort bore fruit, it was worthwhile to be persistent.

But the thing about Fumo is that two are better than one. This is when I got greedy. It was almost midnight and I had to be up at 6:30am for work. I quickly justified sleeping less than usual and kept at it with a renewed sense of vigor. Once I got my first Fumo it became less erratic and more enjoyable. I no longer felt like I had everything to lose. I aimed for Satori because I didn’t want my Koishi to be lonely without her onee-chan. I think it was about two waves later that I found success from my phone. The orange button appeared and I was able to breeze through the checkout with no problems to speak of. But the relief that washed over me was short-lived. It was now almost 1 am and I was not really looking forward to 5 hours of sleep. But that wasn’t the problem, something more important was bugging me! I had Remi but NO FLAN! I looked at the /fumo/ thread and felt empowered once more. I was back again ordering that RTX 3070ti and fumbling my phone as I was trying to respond to the automated text from my bank that I was indeed trying to spend $900 at Best Buy. And I remembered staying up until 4am to buy Koishi on Gift’s site and celebrating in the /jp/ thread. Such moments became special memories that would go on to paint the tapestry of my legend. The conquests of old were worth enduring to have a taste of sweet success. I cranked some EastNewSound and got to work.

I camped out on many different instances of the Flandre Scarlet Fumo listing and refreshed with my remaining strength. I threw caution to the wind and no longer felt remorseful for the inevitable sleep deprivation I would feel in the morning. But in the grand scheme of things, it would be inconsequential. It felt increasingly futile as I kept seeing hundreds of Access Restriction pages not even letting me see my future soft. A few times on my phone I managed to see the promised orange Pre-Order button but I was met with the cursed “Please Wait” message which inevitably ended with another restricted page. It was now 2am and I was almost ready to succumb to defeat. I had missed at least 3 or 4 waves since the Satori purchase and it seemed like the sale was all but over. Surely, there couldn’t be more stock, right? 4 hours of refreshing this site and my left hand left like I was developing carpal tunnel syndrome. The thread was slowing down as well and it seemed like it was time to go to bed at least. However, something kept me going. There’s no fucking way I’d sleep soundly knowing I could’ve gotten a Flandre, but gave up right before the end. My unhinged autism was fueling my cope and I kept on refreshing. I was already up this late, might as well see this war of attrition through to the end. And then I saw it- an orange Pre-Order button appeared. I frame-perfect combo’ed the hell out of that button and no-clipped through the checkout process.

And at long last, the Scarlet sisters were reunited and the Komeiji sisters would be together once again. There was something about that Flan that motivated me like nothing else. I would give up on games when a boss kicked my ass in after more than an hour or two. But here I persisted. It could have very-well been futile, but the payoff came in the end. Almost 3 years ago I failed to buy a Flandre Scarlet Fumo off Yahoo Japan Auctions, but now she is mine. I guess if there’s one thing I learned from this, it’s to NEVER GIVE UP.
Please Wait Warmly

So now I’m writing this on Monday morning and still feel the lingering adrenaline coursing through my veins. I ended up turning everything off around 2:30am but I was still in fight-or-flight mode for some time later. The point is that I don’t feel as tired as I was anticipating. I am lucky enough to be able to look back upon this night and smile, only because I was victorious. I got all the girls I was aiming for and slept like a baby knowing that they would be with me soon. This day will be remembered for the absolute shitshow it was, but stories from the soft crusade will be whispered around like the stories of legend. “I was up for so long refreshing that damn page” or “FINALLY GOT HER” or “Screw Amico.” I was there, and I got what I wanted, which is more than I could have asked for. I only wish that everyone else was able to experience the same exhilarating feeling I feel now. Twas hype as heck- this is what I live for!
